After months of preparation, your little one is finally here! Now it’s time to capture photos of their first days so you have those images to cherish for years to come.
Maybe you’ve been anticipating these photos for months. Or maybe you haven’t even had time to think about them with so much change happening in your family. Either way, I’m here to help! Check out these tips to help you prepare for your newborn photo session.
Pick the perfect wardrobe.
As with any photo shoot, choosing an outfit is highly important. Fortunately, for a newborn shoot, that’s super easy! The best outfit for a newborn is nothing. After all, you want to capture that soft baby skin and those tiny fingers and toes.
While you may not want to bring any outfits for your little one, accessories are a great idea. Choose items that have special meaning to you and your family, like a family heirloom blanket or one of your childhood toys. I love including these items in newborn photos because they add a sweet touch of personal detail.
Have a chat with older siblings.
It’s a great idea to include your older children in newborn portraits to capture those first moments with their new sibling. After all, this new baby marks a change not just for you and your partner, but for your whole family.
Be sure to explain to your children how important it is to listen and follow the photographer’s directions during the session. And don’t forget to bring along a few non-messy snacks as well!
Choose your own outfit.
Of course, these are newborn photos, but you’ll want images of you as well! Your life may be a little hectic, but take some time to choose your own outfit for the session. Pick something simple and comfortable. After all, your little one will be the focus of the images! Makeup is always optional, but sometimes a little makeup can help you feel fresher and more put together. In the same way, some basic hair products can help you tame any strays.
Don’t change up baby’s routine.
To ensure your newborn is content during their session, don’t adjust their diet beforehand. Just keep feeding on your regular scheduling, and be sure to bring plenty of extra bottles along to your shoot. You’ll also want to try to keep your baby awake prior to the session so they’ll more easily doze off and let us get those precious, snuggling shots!
Just relax and trust your photographer.
You picked your newborn photographer because of their experience and skill. They know what they’re doing, and you can trust that your little one is in good hands! Take your session as a chance to relax a bit, and as a result you’ll have photos to share with family and friends and help you remember these first days for a lifetime.
