Styling a unique and beautiful session for my clients is one of my favourite parts of being a photographer. I love home decor and buying pretty things, and I get to use both these passions when creating custom sets for each session. If you have looked at all around my website, you will notice I love flowers. And when a client requests a floral set-up, that makes my heart sing! The sweet baby girl in this session is named Kate, and her mom loves aqua and purple and flowers. When I showed her my ideas for this set, she was over the moon excited. I had the dress in my studio closet already, and my mom (who is my assistant and also the owner of Dew Drop Photo Props) created a custom headband to go with the florals in the set design. All Kate’s mom had to do was bring her to the session; we provided everything else including the gorgeous (and delicious!) rustic style cake.
As you can see, Kate was an incredibly happy baby who loved her cake. This is no accident; I worked closely with Kate’s mom in order to schedule her session for Kate’s happiest time of day. I also work with an experienced cake baker who uses minimal food dyes and makes the icing less sweet than normal because babies tend to be overwhelmed by too much sugar. As a client, you are encouraged to give babies a taste of cake *before* the photo session, and I keep in close contact with you leading up to the session. If baby is teething, sick, skipped a nap, or just not having a good day, then let me know and we will reschedule. It is super important that baby be in a great mood for the session. It makes it less stressful for you and baby, and I am much more likely to get some incredible photos that you will cherish forever.
After cake smash sessions, I have seen a lot of people struggle with what they should do with the photos. Most of the time, when you do a cake smash with a photographer you pay a flat fee to get them all as digital files and then hopefully you will get around to printing one or two. Eventually. Well, I do things differently. I let you pick which photos you truly love and then help you decide what to do with them so they don’t just sit there on a USB. My packages are a flat fee, but you get to use all of that amount towards art. And with every print or image in a box or album that you purchase, you get the matching digital file. That way you still get your files for making small prints on your own, but now you have your beautiful session printed and ready to enjoy every single day. My most popular options for cake smashes are my albums or boxes and my custom framed collages that display 7-9 photos. They are all perfect for telling the visual story of baby’s cake smash, and they get those gorgeous photos off the USB and onto your walls (or hands!) for you to cherish for years to come. If you would like more details or are interested in booking a session of your own, please check out the Baby’s Milestone & Cake Smash page or Contact Me and I will be happy to chat with you.
